Independent Assessment of Neurological Life Expectancy
Neurological injury or disease may, in some circumstances, affect life expectancy. The extent of any effect depends on the diagnosis, severity of impairment, associated medical complications, functional status, general health and the individual’s clinical course.
Our consultant neurologists review the available medical records, diagnosis, treatment history, investigation findings, current neurological condition and relevant published research before providing an opinion.
A diagnosis alone does not necessarily determine life expectancy. The expert considers the particular features of the individual case, including the stability or progression of the condition, level of independence, mobility, respiratory or swallowing difficulties, seizure control and other clinically relevant complications.
Each opinion is balanced and transparent. The report identifies the evidence relied upon, material assumptions, limitations, uncertainties and any factors that may alter the assessment over time.
The neurologist provides clinical opinion within their area of expertise. Where formal statistical modelling, actuarial calculation or financial quantification is required, separate evidence from an appropriately qualified expert may also be necessary.
Factors Considered
Life Expectancy Assessment Factors
- The underlying neurological injury, disease or diagnosis
- Severity and extent of neurological impairment
- Associated medical and neurological complications
- Functional status, mobility and level of independence
- Age, general health and relevant pre-existing conditions
- Treatment, rehabilitation and the subsequent clinical course
- Current clinical evidence and relevant published research
